Starting this week, a prominent mural decorates the facade of the student complex on Calslaan in Enschede, located on the University of Twente campus. The building, commonly known as ‘Mondriaan’, is one of several sites chosen for murals celebrating Enschede’s 700th anniversary.
Five housing corporations, Veste Wonen, Domijn, Ons Huis, SJHT, and De Woonplaats, have collaborated with the North District of the Municipality of Enschede and Enschede Promotion to create seven unique murals across the city. These artworks serve as lasting tributes to the anniversary year and bring vibrant colour to Enschede.
The mural on Mondriaan was designed and executed by artist Johan Moorman. He was commissioned to create a piece that reflects the building’s name and pays homage to the distinctive architecture of Mondriaan, characterised by slanted lines and large open surfaces.
The brief called for a visual interpretation of the dynamic campus environment at the University of Twente, incorporating elements of the technical industry, digital technology, innovation, and engineering. The result is an abstract visual language that integrates harmoniously with the building while presenting a futuristic aesthetic, something we are proud of as Veste Wonen.
The mural on Mondriaan is not only an artistic statement but also a visual celebration of the innovative spirit of Enschede and the University of Twente. A neighbourhood celebration with local residents is planned soon to mark the mural’s unveiling.

Street art op Mondriaan-pand viert Enschede700
Vanaf deze week siert een opvallend kunstwerk de gevel van het studentencomplex aan de Calslaan in Enschede, op de campus van de Universiteit Twente. Het gebouw, beter bekend op de campus als ‘Mondriaan’, is één van de locaties waar ter ere van het 700-jarig bestaan van Enschede een muurschildering is gerealiseerd.
Vijf woningcorporaties, Veste Wonen, Domijn, Ons Huis, SJHT en De Woonplaats, sloegen samen met Stadsdeel Noord van de Gemeente Enschede en Enschede Promotie de handen ineen om zeven unieke muurschilderingen te realiseren, verspreid door de stad. Deze kunstwerken vormen een blijvende herinnering aan het feestjaar en geven Enschede kleur.
De muurschildering op Mondriaan is ontworpen en gerealiseerd door kunstenaar Johan Moorman. Moorman kreeg de opdracht om een kunstwerk te creëren dat aansluit bij de kleur en naamgeving van het gebouw én recht doet aan de karakteristieke architectuur van Mondriaan, met zijn schuine lijnen en grote open vlakken.
In de briefing aan de kunstenaar werd gevraagd om een visuele vertaling van de dynamische campusomgeving van de Universiteit Twente, (voorheen) de Technische Universiteit, met verwijzingen naar technische industrie, digitale technologie, innovatie en engineering.
Het resultaat is een geabstraheerde beeldtaal die op respectvolle wijze integreert met het gebouw en tegelijkertijd een futuristische uitstraling heeft. Een prachtig kunstwerk op de campus, waar wij trots op zijn als woningcorporatie!
Binnenkort wordt de muurschildering in de buurt gevierd met de omwonende buurtbewoners van Mondriaan.
