Burglary prevention

Burglary prevention
You don't want a burglar to be able to enter your home. Make it difficult for burglars to break in by following these tips, and read about what to do if you've been the victim of a burglary.

  • Always lock up
Even if you're stepping out for just 5 minutes, always lock your front and back doors, as well as your windows. Turn the key at least once to prevent burglars from opening the door with a piece of plastic. Don’t forget to remove the key.
  • Close windows
Also, make sure to close any tilt-and-turn windows when you're away, as burglars can easily hook them open and gain entry.
  • Avoid key risks
Avoid hiding keys in predictable places, like under a flowerpot—burglars know these common hiding spots. Instead, leave a spare key with a trusted neighbor or friend.
  • Keep valuables out of sight
Store valuable items such as money, jewelry, laptops, gaming consoles, and tablets out of view from windows. Consider investing in a safe for extra security.
  • Install an alarm
If you own valuable items or live in a remote area, consider installing a home alarm system or a secure safe to protect your belongings. There are also user-friendly window alarms available at an affordable price.
  • Make your home look occupied
If you're going to be away for an extended period, ask a neighbor, roommate, friend, or family member to collect your mail. Set timers for lights to turn on and off to give the appearance that someone is home.
  • Protect your privacy online
Don't announce your absence on social media. For example, avoid posting that you're on vacation, as it may alert potential burglars that your home is empty.
  • Report burglaries to the police
If your home is burgled, it’s essential to report it to the police. Reporting helps them track down the burglars and recover your stolen belongings. To file a report, call 0900-8844 and schedule an appointment.
  • Be aware and report suspicious situations
In case of a suspicious situation it is wise to contact the police or UT security. Note the license plate of the suspicious car or the description of the suspicious person. Report this to the police. Stay calm. Do not take risks! Report your name, your place of residence, the address, and what exactly is going on.
